USA Order - Desmond Hoostie Pro Deck

For the next pro graphic, Colonialism proudly introduces their latest Pro team rider, Desmond Hoostie. The graphic, designed by Vince Dumoulin, features a Star Blanket with the White Bear community colours and symbol at its center. Desmond hails from White Bear First Nations, located in Treaty 4 Territory (established in 1874).
The Star Blanket holds deep cultural and spiritual significance in many First Nations communities. While its meaning can vary among the diverse nations on Turtle Island, it generally symbolizes protection, guidance, and a connection to the spirit world. Traditionally, Buffalo robes were used as Star Blankets, but with the arrival of European trading posts and settlers in the 1800s, fabric and sewing materials became available, leading to the modern Star Blanket. These blankets are presented during ceremonies, smudges, sweats, or celebrations, with the eight-pointed star representing kindness, humility, honesty, respect, healing, forgiveness, love, and wisdom. The outward-pointing star signifies that this wisdom benefits the entire community.

Desmond’s home community, White Bear First Nations, has made significant strides in advocating for First Nations rights and sovereignty. In the late 1990s, White Bear opened a casino, defying provincial laws and sparking a historic legal and political battle. The RCMP raided the casino, seizing over a hundred machines and nearly a hundred thousand dollars in cash. This confrontation highlighted the limitations of existing legal frameworks and intensified discussions about Indigenous self-governance and economic independence.

The White Bear casino case was pivotal in the ongoing struggle for First Nations sovereignty in Canada. It challenged legal norms and set a precedent for other Indigenous communities seeking sovereignty. The case remains a crucial milestone in the journey toward reconciliation and self-determination for First Nations across the country. The White Bear First Nations played a pivotal role in advocating for the recognition and respect of First Nations' sovereignty and rights. Their leadership and activism have influenced the way colonial and Canadian governments address Indigenous rights, particularly in the context of land, self-determination, and sovereignty.
